Who else loves when the smell of baked apples invades your entire home?
This apple crust will do exactly that.
I really enjoy making this dessert, every single step has something special to offer; it's super fun to prepare, waiting for it while it bakes it's so inviting and, without surprise, eating this delicious dessert is everyones favourite part and an experience on it’s own.
Let me tell you why is it so special.
First of all, we are making this dessert from scratch, so making the crust involves getting your hands in a bowl full of dough and kneading it for a while. Talk about a good stress relief therapy!
Kids love to be part of this since it's so much fun! I usually set a side a small amount of dough for my son to play with while I work on the big masterpiece. He gets so excited to be involved and its adorable to see him "cook like mama", as he would say.
Assembling this beauty is very simple and quick, just place all the apples on the crust and sprinkle them with the topping mixture. All the ingredients in the toppings are put together to enhance the apple flavour and give the crust a nice chewy texture.
Then comes the baking! While it is only a matter of putting the whole thing in the oven it is such a delight! The smell of the apples covered in cinnamon, the heartwarming aromas of coconut sugar and the nutty scent of almond flour will have you dreaming!
It takes about an hour to have this indulgent dessert ready, including the 30 minutes it takes to bake, but believe me, once the aromas begin invading your home you will absolutely forget about time. For this reason make sure you set up a timer and stay close to your kitchen!
The making process is good but really we love this recipe because:
If you are wondering what kind of apples you should use, pretty much any kind will work. I'd stay away from green apples since they can sometimes be very sour. Other than that pick the one you like the most, whatever is in season or just go for the most economical one.
I make this apple crust all year long, no mater what season we are in. During colder winter days we have it with hot cocoa or chai tea, and during the summer it goes great with a scoop of vegan ice cream.
Have fun making this recipe, and enjoy the process!
