Today, I'm cooking with Spanish black radish, a little-known veggie with great healing properties. I'll show you a very easy way to introduce this veggie to your diet. You will get all of its benefits and at the same time enjoy a light and delicious meal.
We well know that you nourish your body with the food you eat. Having a healthy clean diet is important for keeping disease away. But food can do much more than that. You can heal your body with certain kinds of food as well.
Food is medicine!
Different foods can serve as different remedies. When you eat the right food you can reduce illness symptoms such as headaches, coughing, dizziness, pain and soreness. And you can even help treat conditions such as arthritis, depression, gastritis, anxiety, insomnia, and even certain infections.
A lot of medical practitioners recur to more natural alternatives before prescribing pharmaceutical drugs. Personally, I think this is a much better approach than solely relying on medicines to heal our bodies.
I remember as a kid, whenever I had a cold, the first thing my parents would give me was an elixir made out of Spanish black radish. It worked like magic in relieving most symptoms of the seasonal cold. Till this day, this is my go-to remedy and it's what got me intrigued on this topic.
The reason Spanish black radish is so good for you when a nasty cold makes its appearance is that it enhances your immune system and it helps your body detoxify. It also promotes healthy digestion, it is great for your skin, liver and gallbladder, it reduces cholesterol and it helps with weight loss.
Nowadays, you can find Spanish black radish capsules to take as a supplement. I prefer buying it fresh since you can use it in different ways. You could either put it through a juicer and drink the juice mixed with syrup. Or, you can include the root vegetable in your recipes to make it part of your diet.
Growing up I only had Spanish black radish as a cold remedy, we never really cooked with it. I wanted to make something different with it so I put together this super simple salad. As a side, and to make this dish more filling, we are having mashed potatoes which are also simple and easy to make.
Since Spanish black radish has a stronger flavour than your typical radish, I threw in some oranges to add sweet and tangy tones to it. All these flavours combined make a refreshing and absolutely delicious meal.
Now that the weather is changing and cooler days are ahead of us, this is a recipe you want to keep handy. It is perfect for lunch or warm days and it will give your body what it needs to be prepared for the cold season.
Another good recipe to have around during this time of the year is this Ribollita Soup. It also has many immune boosting properties and is a great option for cooler days.
