Today we are tapping into a cuisine we haven't explored much yet. But I think it really deserves our full attention. It has a lot of flavours and different elements we should really take advantage of. But today we are going to keep it simple with this Spanish rice that's incredibly flavourful.
I first came across Spanish rice at a Mexican restaurant. I know this doesn't make much sense but Spanish rice is a big deal in Mexican cuisine. Actually, it's also know as Mexican rice in many places.
When I first came across this I was a bit confused. But it totally makes sense considering the history of both countries. Mexico was invaded by Spain around the 1500s. So there's a big influence of the Spanish culture in Mexico, food included.
But enough history, let's get into what we are here for. Our delicious Spanish rice. This recipe is far easier to make than what people think. But I believe it can be deceiving since the end result is so delicious. It is also a very eye pleasing recipe that will look beautiful on your table.
Because it is both pretty and delicious, this Spanish rice is the perfect recipe to make when you are having people over for a nice dinner. It is simple enough that it won't have you in the kitchen all night but flavourful enough to impress everyone. Also, there aren't many dirty dishes left once you're done. Who doesn't love that?!
And even if there's no fancy dinner, I like making Spanish rice every so often since it is a great way to make rice more interesting. There are so many recipes out there that call for plain rice, that it is good to have it cooked differently.
There are a few different versions of this rice out there on the web. For this recipe, I put together my favourite elements. I have to say I'm pretty happy with the end result. I even added a touch of Sriracha sauce to this Spanish rice but it is definitely not spicy at all.
Other than the flavour, Spanish rice is characteristic for having some chopped vegetables in it. So we have some tomato, green peas, onion and red pepper. These veggies will add some vitamins, minerals and other nutrients to our dish.
You can even mix it up a little bit when it comes to the veggies. For example, there are bell peppers in different colours, you can switch them up or mix and match as you prefer. Keep in mind that green peppers sometimes taste a bit bitter. That's why I rather use red and yellow when available.
To prepare you'll just have to sauté your veggies in a skillet, add the rest of the ingredients for the rice and let it do its thing. Some people use water instead of broth, but I really think the broth is what really makes this Spanish rice! Finish it off with the herbs and make it look even prettier with pepper flakes sprinkled on top!
